Alberta (EFA) Overview
EFA is a series of emergency financial assistance programs to help the citizens most affected by a health emergency. You can register for emergency financial assistance if you are faced with an unexpected emergency.
You will get assistance if you:
- Unforeseen conditions beyond your influence have resulted in a crisis, and
- It poses a serious health threat, and
- You are unable to seek other resources or wait for the next wage cheque or Income Support benefit cheque.
What is included in the package
This sum will be used to pay for:
- Food.
- Clothing.
- Child care.
- Transportation.
- Damage deposit.
- Temporary accommodation.
- Utility arrears. If you need assistance with utility arrears more than once, you must refund this money.
- Eviction payments. If you need assistance with eviction payments more than once, you must refund this money.
Emergency Needs Allowance rates are published on page two of the Financial Benefits Summary.
The following expenses can be compensated but must be reimbursed:
- Home fixes that are absolutely necessary.
- Appliance repairs are necessary.
Evidence of a need
You must show that you are in desperate need, such as by submitting the following documents:
- A declaration of arrears or an eviction notice.
- A bill or declaration for unpaid utility bills.
- Evidence from a reputable source that the item is essential, such as a fire department warning about faulty wiring.
Eligibility
If you meet the following criteria, you could be eligible for the Emergency Needs Allowance:
- You are currently client of Income Support.
- You make a living in Alberta, but you don’t have enough money to afford this one-time, short-term emergency that won’t last more than a month.
- You follow the eligibility criteria for the Income Support program.
