How to apply for Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH)
Know how to apply for the Financial and health benefits for eligible Albertans with a permanent medical condition that prevents them from earning a living.
AISH Eligibility
- You have a medical disorder that makes it difficult for you to gain a living.
- Your medical problem is expected to last for the rest of your life.
- There is no medical care, counseling, recovery, or preparation that will help you increase your earning life capacity.
- You are above the age of 18 and do not qualify for an Old Age Security pension.
- You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who lives in Alberta.
- You are not in a detention center or a mental health institution like Alberta Hospital Edmonton.
- You satisfy the financial requirements.

What you might possibly get
Depending on the circumstances, you can receive:
- A monthly stipend – funds to cover living expenses such as food, leasing, and services.
- A child benefit – funds to help you raise your dependent children on a monthly basis.
- Health benefits – financial support to cover your, your spouse or partner’s, and your children’s medical expenses.
- Personal benefits – cash over and above the monthly living budget for individual conditions including a special diet or medical assistance.

Timeline for submitting applications
Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted by AISH.
Prioritization is provided to applicants who are seeking end-of-life palliative treatment and/or have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Application delivery times differ based on the amount of applications AISH receives from Albertans and how easily we obtain all of the financial and medical details they need for each individual’s application.
How to Getting your payments
- Enroll in direct deposit.
- Plan accordingly and, if necessary, change the timing of your monthly bill payments.
- Standard postal delivery dates apply on paper cheques.
- To receive your services quicker than by mail, sign up for direct deposit or speak with your caseworker for help.
AISH Payment dates
The first of the month is the AISH payment day. The payment date is the last business day of the preceding month whether the first of the month occurs on a weekend or holiday.
On the following dates, payments are made at midnight:
For the year 2021
- 23rd of December, 2020 (January benefits)
- 1st of February (February benefits)
- 1st of March (March benefits)
- 1st of April (April benefits)
- 30th of April (May benefits)
- 1st of June (June benefits)
- 30th of June (July benefits)
- 30th of July (August benefits)
- 1st of September (September benefits)
- 1st of October (October benefits)
- 1st of November (November benefits)
- 1st of December (December benefits)
- 29th of December (January 2022 benefits)

Second Step: Download, save, print and Fill out the AISH Application Part A
Download and print the form at this link:(https://cfr.forms.gov.ab.ca/form/DS2444aPrint.pdf), then start filling it out by hand. If you have difficulty opening the file update your Adobe Reader tool or contact an AISH office or Alberta Supports to obtain one.
Third Step: Download, save, print and make your Doctor Fill out the AISH Application Part B
Download and print the form at this link:(https://cfr.forms.gov.ab.ca/form/DS2444bPrint.pdf), then tell your doctor for start to filling it out by hand. If you have difficulty opening the file update your Adobe Reader tool or contact an AISH office or Alberta Supports to obtain one.
Keep in Mind:
- This service may be charged to you by your doctor.
- You are responsible for paying the doctor’s charge in order for the medical report to be completed.
- The cost of filling out these reports may be paid if you are on Income Support; contact your Income Support specialist for further information.
- If you are not eligible for Income Support but require financial assistance, learn how to apply for alternative benefits while you wait for AISH.
- Request that your doctor send AISH the completed Part B – Medical Report. You can also submit it to AISH on your own by:
-You might include it in your AISH application, or
-Faxing it to 1-877-969-3006 (toll-free) or 587-469-3006 (Edmonton).
-Send it to Edmonton, Alberta T5J 4B3 at PO Box 17000 Station Main.
Fourth Step: Request your Processing
- Gather all of the papers you’ll need to finish your AISH application, including your application form.
- Make duplicates of your documents.
- Please submit your AISH application and accompanying documentation by the following deadlines:
-Bringing them to an AISH office or an Alberta Supports Centre near you
submitting them through the internet. https://www.alberta.ca/alberta-supports.aspx
-Send them to Edmonton, Alberta T5J 4B3 at PO Box 17000 Station Main. Or
faxing them at 1-877-969-3006 (toll free) or 587-469-3006 (Edmonton).
Fifth Step: After you’ve submitted your application
When they get your application, they will contact you. If you haven’t given them all of the personal, financial, or medical information they require, they may ask for more.
Call 1-877-759-6810 (toll free) or 587-759-6810 if you have any queries concerning the progress of your AISH application (Edmonton area).
If your application is accepted, you will be notified as follows:
- You’ll get a call and a letter informing you that you’re qualified for AISH.
- To arrange a meeting with an AISH worker, you will be contacted by phone or mail.
- Your rewards will be retroactive to the beginning of the month. AISH has received all of the necessary information to approve your application.
If your application is denied, you will receive a letter stating:
- You may be ineligible for AISH for a variety of reasons, including financial, medical, and other factors.
- Ways to provide additional information to AISH indicating a change in your position.
- What is the procedure for appealing the decision
- If you have any questions, you can contact the AISH Application Processing Centre or the local AISH office.
- There you may learn about alternative financial and health benefit programs that can be of use to you.
Remember:
If you leave AISH, your AISH file may be easily reopened if:
- You haven’t received AISH benefits in less than two years.
- You did not quit AISH because of a change in your health.

You will need to reapply if these requirements do not apply to you.
